Women play a pivotal role in the fabric of families and society, despite historical and global perceptions of their inferiority to men. Indian women, in particular, have risen above societal prejudices and cultural biases to excel in various fields, including sports.
Through dedication and hard work, female athletes have defied stereotypes and paved the way for successful careers, inspiring generations to come.
Overcoming gender disparities remains a significant challenge for female athletes in India. Discrepancies in salaries and prize money between male and female athletes often hinder the progress of women in sports.
Outstanding Athletes
Despite these hurdles, women like Sania Mirza, Mary Kom, Mithali Raj, PV Sindhu, and Saina Nehwal have showcased unparalleled talent and determination, bringing pride to the nation. Their achievements not only break gender norms but also serve as a beacon of hope for aspiring female athletes.
Sania Mirza
Sania Mirza is an Indian former professional tennis player. A former world number one in doubles, she has won six Grand Slam titles - three in women's doubles and three in mixed doubles. She was ranked as India's No. 1 singles player by the Women's Tennis Association from 2003 until her retirement from singles in 2013. Over the course of her career, has become one of India's most recognizable, highest-paid, and influential athletes.
In October 2005, Mirza was named one of Time Magazine's “50 Heroes of Asia” and on November 25, 2013, on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, she was named UN Women Goodwill Ambassador for South Asia. She was also recognized by Time Magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2016.
Mary Kom
Mary Kom is an Indian Olympic boxer, politician, and former member of the Rajya Sabha. She is the only woman to have won the World Boxing Championships six times, the only female boxer to have medaled in the first seven World Championships, and the only boxer to have medaled in eight World Championships. She is also the only Indian woman boxer to have qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Pusarla Venkata Sindhu
Pusarla Venkata Sindhu, popularly known as PV Sindhu, is an Indian badminton player. PV Sindhu is considered to be one of India's most successful athletes, having won medals at competitions such as the Olympics, the World Championships, and the World Tour. She is the first and only Indian to become a World Champion in badminton and the second Indian to win two consecutive medals at the Olympics.
Saina Nehwal
Saina Nehwal is an Indian badminton player. A former world number one, she has won 24 international titles, including 10 Super Series titles. Although she reached world number two in 2009, it was not until 2015 that she was able to reach world number one, thus becoming the only female player from India and the next Indian player to achieve this feat after Prakash Padukone.
She has represented India at the Olympics on three occasions, winning a bronze medal in her second appearance at the 2012 London Olympics.
Mithali Raj
Mithali Raj is a former Indian cricketer who captained the national team from 2004 to 2022. She is the highest run-scorer in women's international cricket, and ESPN has named her one of the greatest female cricketers of all time. Raj has won several national and international awards, including the Wisden Award for Outstanding Women's Cricketer of the World in 2017, the Arjuna Award in 2003, the Lotus Prize in 2015, and the Major Dhyan Chand in 2021. Raj holds several records in international cricket. She is the only female cricketer to have scored more than 7,000 runs in a Women's One Day International (WODI).
